I been a LAMP person for the past few years, and I want to expand my knowledge to include Microsoft technologies.

When I design a database in MySQL I can use notepad text editor.

To design a database to be put into MSSQL Server 7. What would I use?

Can I use a text editor too and then import the text file into MSSQL Server 7?

Or do I use MS Access to design the database and then copy the file onto the MSSQL Server 7 server???

Thanks

Hi there -

While you are welcome to use any text editor, it would probably be easiest in SQL 7 to use the Query Analyzer if you are of a mind to do it via script. If you had scripts that you wanted to execute (which, I think, you call an "import" though we would have a different definition of importing a text file in SQL Server parlance), you could execute them inside the Query Analyzer or, if you want to do it via batch files or at the command prompt/DOS, you would use osql.exe.

You can use Access too but that seems unnecessary to me.

For newbies to SQL Server, most people would prefer starting with the Enterprise Manager. We don't have any vids on using SQL 7 but you might want to check out http://www.learnsqlserver2000.com/ for videos on using the QUery Analyzer and Enterprise Manager.

Good luck!
